Section 33 - Sligo

Enniscrone - Coolaney

Decription

This may be a challenging section, for some, but it is one of the most spectacular and peaceful sections of the route. There is also quite a steep climb up the Ladies Brae (3km long with an average of 5.6%) – but the views at the top will reward your effort. Also, and important to know, after you leave Enniscrone there are no services until the end of this section at Coolaney, 67km away, so it is essential that you have enough food and drinks to meet your needs. Coolaney is a small village but there are some shops here where you will get food.  Also, it is important be aware that currently, bookable accomodation options at or near Coolaney are very limited. To find accomodation you may need to continue along the next short section towards Sligo. As you approach Sligo accomodation will be more plentiful. (see some accomodation options in POIs below and in Section 34 POI list )

Starting from the seaside village of Enniscrone, which boasts a long sandy beach and stunning Atlantic views, the route climbs gradually into the Ox Mountains. Eventually you will pass the spectacular and ultra peaceful Lough Easkey. The route continues from here on very minor roads to the Ladies Brae, with lots of spectacular scenery along the way. After the steep climb (mentioned above) there is a beautiful descent and as this levels out look out for the tranquil picnic area along the Owenboy River, a great place to stop for a break. From here another 8km on flat roads brings you to the village of Coolaney.
