Quin Abbey

Description

This route section starts in the vibrant riverside city of Limerick where the visitor can experience its unique spirit, the friendliness of the people, the sporting passion, the history and the rural majesty of the County.

From Limerick city the route makes a significant climb around the shoulder of Woodcock Hill where it delivers impressive views of the city of Limerick and the surrounding countryside below. The route then continues on to the small town of Sixmilebridge where you can enjoy the ‘duck Inn’ on the O’Garney River. This is a floating raft with glass windows and painted walls which houses a large population of very happy ducks!

Next stop is the Holy Well and graveyard overlooking the beautiful Fenloe lake. Continue on past Knappogue Castle or take a short detour to Craggaunowen, a fascinating 16th-century castle and archaeological open-air museum which recreates the lifestyle of ancient Celtic ancestors in the crannog and ring fort. Just a short spin from here you arrive at the historic village of Quin where you can visit Quin Abbey, a perfect example of a medieval settlement.

Road surface is generally moderate / well rideable on asphalted roads however some sections are showing signs of degradation and care needs to be exercised. Roads are generally lightly trafficked.

This route section ends in the village of Clarecastle.
