The 18km Newport to Mulranny section forms part of the World Class Great Western Greenway (Westport – Achill), a 44 km traffic free cycling and walking facility which primarily follows the line of the famous Westport / Achill Railway, which closed in 1937.The trail is renowned for its stunning views with landscape steeped in history with Mulranny being the heart of this section. Breathtaking views of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick to the south and the Nephin Beg Range to the north offer cyclists some of the most idyllic scenery in the west of Ireland. Belmullet, on the North West coast of County Mayo, is home to idyllic, white sandy beaches, wind-swept coasts and stunning cliffs. Belmullet in the barony of Erris, a real heaven for cyclists, surfers, walkers and enthusiasts of water-sports.

Families will also find ideal beaches where children can play safely and have a swim in the crystal clear water or experience the real wild nature and enjoy the many fantastic boat trips and maritime adventures, where you can spot dolphins, puffins, whales and peregrine falcons.

The Mayo Greenway traverses Ireland’s Atlantic coast between Westport town and Achill Island and visits the picturesque villages of Newport and Mulranny (Mallaranny). It passes by some of the West of Ireland’s most dramatic mountains and offers magnificent views of Clew Bay and its many islands.

The Newport to Mulranny trail stretches 18km and is renowned for its stunning views with landscape steeped in history with Mulranny begin the heart of this section. The Mulranny to Achill route is 13km long, both of which provide an excellent recreational amenity for locals and visitors alike. The Greenway, with its gentle gradients and outstanding scenery, is suitable for people with moderate levels of fitness. Breathtaking views of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick to the south and the Nephin Beg Range to the north offer cyclist some of the most idyllic scenery in the west of Ireland. Alternatively there are other cycle routes available such as a loop around Achill Island. Wherever cyclists choose to go, they will enjoy a great variety of routes and breathtaking views along the way.

Mulranny to Achill Sound (13km)

The 14km Mulranny to Achill Section forms part of the World Class Great Western Greenway (Westport – Achill), a 44 km traffic free cycling and walking facility which primarily follows the line of the famous Westport / Achill Railway, which closed in 1937. Its development has been made possible by agreement of local landowners who have allowed permissive access to users to pass through their lands.

This route offers gentle gradients and some of the most idyllic scenery in the west of Ireland. The route forms part of the National Cycle Network and it is the longest off road cycling experience in the Country.
