The EuroVelo 1 route between Dungloe and Creeslough is a stunningly beautiful stretch of road that showcases the scenic beauty of Ireland’s North West coast.

Travelling northwards, the route passes through the villages of Crolly and Gweedore (both of which are on the main road – so take care on this stretch of about 8km). Leaving Gweedore there are views of the spectacular Mount Errigal ahead and Lough Nacung on the right. About 2km after Gweedore the route turns off the main road and heads up to the base of Mt Errigal if you would like to see the spectacular village of Dunlewy it is worth staying on the main road for about 2km after the junction to see this location and then returning to the route.

Having passed the foot of Mt Errigal on very small and quiet roads roads after travelling north for about 15km the route turns east. At this junction cyclists have an option to leave the route and visit the village of Fallcaragh which is about 2km away. The route then passes along the northern flaks of Muckish Mountai. It’s distinctive flat topped shape gave it its name – an Mhucais, meaning “the pig’s back”.

From this section there is another option to deviate off the route to the seaside village of Dunfanaghy. Dunfanaghy is a small town and former fishing port which is the commercial centre of the north coast of County Donegal. Just outside the village is a three-mile-long sandy beach known as Killahoey Strand.

If cyclists stay on the route they soon reach the village of Cresslough, which is at the end of this section.
