This section offers some challenging climbs and takes the cyclist from Kenmare town to Waterville via Lissyclearig, Molls Gap, Blackwater, Ballaghbeama Pass, Glencar, Ballaghisheen Pass and Mastergeehy. Cyclists are rewarded with stunning views on completion of some steep climbs, particularly on the Ballaghbeama and Ballaghisheen Passes. Kenmare is one of Ireland’s first planned towns with a reputation for gourmet food and excellent accommodation. The original Irish name for the town is Neidín meaning ‘little nest’ referring to its location nestled in the surrounding mountains. It is situated on both the Ring of Kerry and Ring of Beara and offers a wide range of activities and experiences including walking, golf, bay cruises and fishing. A challenging cycle over Molls Gap, Ballaghbeama and Ballaghisheen Pass is rewarded with a stop in the lovely seafront village of Waterville with plenty of food and accommodation options to suit all tastes and budgets. Charlie Chaplin was a regular visitor to the village and is honoured with a statue and annual festival.
