Wellington Bridge - Ballyhack/Passage East

Description

On this section of the route you will discover ancient ruins, quiet country lanes, hidden coves and stunning coastal landscapes.  The route out of Wellingtonbridge heads north along the R738 before looping back towards the coast and out towards the stunning Hook Peninsula.  Enjoying cycling along the coast through St. Kieran’s and Saltmills.  Take time out to stop at Tintern Abbey and Colclough Walled Garden to explore the Abbey and the recently restored walled gardens.

Fethard -on -sea is a great stop for refreshments before embarking on the next leg of the journey.  If time is with you take a short detour down to Carnivan Bay, one of Wexford’s most stunning beaches and best kept secret.  Next head for the renowned Hook Peninsula.

Do note that while the official Euro Velo route does not bring cyclists down to the lighthouse right out on the furthesmost point of Hook Head Peninsula, it is well worth exploring    Here you will discover stunning coastal landscapes and the oldest operational lighthouse in the world. Head back inland and west into Duncannon village, a bustling tourist spot in the summer months. This section ends in Ballyhack a short spin from Duncannon from where you can take the Passage East Ferry across the estuary to Waterford for the next section of the Euro Velo.

Historic Site: 3
  • Explore the remains of an 11th Century Cicstercian Abbey at Tintern and the beautifully restored Colclough Walled Garden Seperate or combined Entry Tickets available. Grounds free to enter.

  • Ballyhack Castle is a large Norman tower house built in the 15th Century.

  • Prominent fort overlooking the Waterford Estuary at Duncannon.

  • Cullenstown Strand is one of Wexford’s many award winning beaches located on the East Coast just 3km from Carrig-on-Bannow.

  • Ballyhack village is the last stop on this section before boarding the ferry across the river to Passage East.

  • Carrig-on-Bannow is a small sleepy rural village on the Norman Way. and a traditional Irish music stronghold in County Wexford.

  • A popular tourist resort in summer, Duncannon has lots of local amenities, places to eat, drink and sleep. There is also a seasonal tourist information centre opposite the entrance to the beach. To find out more visit: duncannonvillage.ie

  • Fethard-on-Sea is a coastal village steeped in history with modern amenities, facilities and accommodation options.

  • The last stop on Section1 and start of Section 2 of Eurovelo1, Wellingtonbridge is a busy little village with lots of facilities and amenities.
