Tacumshane Windmill

Tacumshane Windmill, adjacent to Meyler’s Millhouse Pub & Restaurant, is the only surviving complete windmill in the South Wexford. There were 13 wind-driven corn mills at work along the south Wexford coast in 1891 but this is the only one that remains.

Built in 1846, this was the last commercially worked windmill in the Republic and was in use until 1936. It is now a national monument.

Almost all the timber used in it’s construction was driftwood or timber taken from shipwrecks locally. Standing three storeys high, it has an unusual revolving straw thatched cap to catch the wind for its sails.

Pop in and have a look around. The key is available from the staff behind the bar in Meylers.
