This route section starts in Clarecastle village just on the outskirts of Ennis town. Explore all things creative, vintage and antique at the Castle Antiques Arts & Craft Centre in the heart of the village.

Take a visit to Clare Abbey situated on the west banks of the River Fergus or take a short detour into Ennis town via the recently constructed cycle/pedestrian path along by the river.

Ennis, the capital of Clare is an historical town and is certainly one of Clare’s most characterful and picturesque centres – with its narrow, winding streets, historical buildings and busy market town atmosphere.

From Clarecastle join the Shannon Estuary Way and experience a sense of freedom through its off-the-beaten track location. The scenic coastal route winds its way through stunning and changing landscapes and river vistas, offering everything from medieval heritage to outdoor adventure along the way. Stop off in delightful villages such as Ballynacally, Labasheeda and Knock and enjoy the rich archaeological record these towns can offer. The Shannon Estuary is home to dolphins that live there all year round and a ferry ride between Killimer in County Clare and Tarbert in County Kerry provides a great opportunity for dolphin spotting.

This route section ends in the coastal town of Kilrush, a perfect base for exploring the exciting west coast with its dramatic scenery and enticing anchorages.

Road surface is generally moderate / well rideable on asphalted roads however some sections are showing signs of degradation and care needs to be exercised. Roads are generally lightly trafficked.
