Section 4

Maynooth / Dublin

Cycling from Maynooth to Dublin Port you continue to follow the Royal Canal Greenway. However, construction on this section is still at various stages of development (May 2025). Some sections are developed and perfect for cycling; some are currently being constructed and may be closed, and some are still just a grass footpath, but it is possible to cycle on this with care.

There is one section of 2km where the path is unsurfaced and very narrow, and it is not currently permitted to cycle for safety reasons. As per the map for this section there is an on-road detour to bypass this. You must leave the Royal Canal and follow this diversion.  This diversion is included in the GPX file for the section which you can download.

Please check for the current status at this link before your planned cycle. If there is a section under construction, you will need to plan an alternative route on an adjacent road to bypass the section. If you would like more detailed advice, please contact info@euroveloireland.ie.

As an alternative which allows you to bypass most of this section, there is a regular train connection between Maynooth Station, right beside the route and Connolly Station in Dublin which is less than a kilometre from the route.

Close to the end of the Royal Canal in Dublin, EuroVelo 2 leaves the canal to join the Dublin Port Greenway which connects to the ferry terminal. This is a dedicated cycle and pedestrian route along the Northern perimeter of the Port overlooking the Tolka Estuary. The Greenway is a celebration of an area of the Port that was not previously accessible to the public.

Please us the GPX track provided to follow the route between the Royal Canal and this greenway.

If you choose you are not planning on going to Dublin Port, you can stay on the Royal Canal Greenway until it ends and this will bring you to the River Liffey close to the city centre.
