At Mullingar EuroVelo 2 joins the Royal Canal Greenway which runs from here to Maynooth (and from there, most of the way into Dublin City). This greenway also offers a serene and picturesque journey through Ireland’s heartland, tracing the historic Royal Canal’s towpath with its many locks and the occasional passing canal boat. The route is flat, making it suitable for cyclists of all levels. Some parts are surfaced with fine gravel and dust, but this is well compacted and suitable for any sort of bike tyres.
About 40km from Mullingar the greenway passes through the small town of Enfield, a charming town perfect for a rest stop. Note: between Mullingar and Enfield there are no services until you reach Enfield – so bring some drinks and snacks if you need them.
At the end of this section after 60km you arrive in the university town of Maynooth. Here there is also a castle called Maynooth Castle and you will find services including food, drinks and accommodation.
