The first 28km of this section continues on local roads until the route reaches the town of Athlone. Athlone straddles the River Shannon – Ireland’s longest River at 360km. In Athlone, EuroVelo 2 crosses the Shannon on a new pedestrian and cycle bridge built to accommodate the route. From here to Dublin Port the route is mostly on a greenway and free from traffic.
Athlone is a vibrant town bursting with personality nestled in the heart of Ireland’s Midlands. Wander through its streets, filled with twisting lanes and historic buildings. History comes alive at Athlone Castle, overlooking the town.
In the centre of Athlone after crossing the Shannon River you join the Old Rail Trail Greenway which brings you to Mullingar at the end of this section, 43km away. The greenway offers a serene journey through the heart of Ireland’s midlands following the route of the former Midlands Great Western Railway. This provides a flat and smooth, tarmac surface ideal for cyclists of all levels, including families and leisure riders. Along the greenway you will pass under charming stone-arched bridges. A notable stop on the greenway is the town of Moate, where you can visit the Dún na Sí Amenity & Heritage Park, a perfect spot for a break and some local culture.
At the end of this greenway you arrive in Mullingar. Here you will find all services providing food, drinks, accommodation and bike repair.
