Section 1

Galway / Ballinasloe

The first 10km of this section from Galway City to Oranmore, 10km east of the city, follows the same route as EuroVelo 1. There is no signposting for EuroVelo 2 yet, so you can follow the signs for EuroVelo 1 on this part of the route.  There are some cycle lanes (marked cycle space on the road) but dedicated cycle paths are not yet developed on this part but. This part of the route is shared with other city traffic, so it is only recommended for cyclists who are confident in this type of cycling environment. If you prefer you can get a train from the city to Oranmore to bypass the busiest part. You can book a ticket here www.irishrail.ie.   It is essential to book a bike space in advance.

After Oranmore you will need to follow the route on a map, on a GPS device or on a phone. There is no EuroVelo 2 signposting yet.

Leaving Oranmore the route follows a moderately busy regional road (R446) which has a hard shoulder/ margin at the edge of the road where you can cycle. After just 5km the route leaves this road and joins the local road network. The roads from here on have very few cars and are very pleasant for cycling.

After 25km the route passes close to the town of Athenry. If you take a short detour into the town, you can get food and drinks. There is an interesting castle and heritage centre here also.

Another 30km from here you reach the village of Aughrim. Finally, after 66km since you left Galway you arrive in Ballinasloe at the end of this section. Ballinasloe is one of the largest towns in County Galway, and the perfect place to relax and refuel before continuing your journey.  The town is famous for hosting Europe’s oldest and largest horse fair, dating back to the 18th century. It takes place at the start of October every year and attracts up to 80,000 visitors.
