Derry/Londonderry – Belfast - Northern Ireland

The section of EuroVelo 1 in Northern Ireland runs between the city of Derry/Londonderry and Belfast over a distance of 220km.

In the city of Derry/Londonderry the route follows a cycle path along the Foyle River for 10Km before crossing back into Co. Donegal for about 24km and travelling on mostly quiet roads to Lifford. Here the route crosses the Foyle River and enters Strabane in Co. Tyrone. Leaving Strabane, the route climbs into the Sperrin Mountains before descending through the town of Cookstown to the shores of Lough Neagh – the largest Lake in the UK and Ireland. After this the route travels south eastwards to the town of Portadown in Co. Armagh before turning north eastwards on a cycle path to Craigavon and then on some quiet roads again eventually joining the Lagan Towpath for the last 32km into Belfast.

The route starts/ finishes (depending on your direction of travel) at the ferry port in Belfast. From here there is a ferry connection Cairnryan joining the EuroVelo 1 in Scotland.

The Northern Ireland section of the route is managed by Sustrans.  While the route follows some sections of cycle path most of the EuroVelo 1 route in Northern Ireland is on quiet roads that were formerly part of the National Cycle Network in Northern Ireland.

While EuroVelo signs are in place on parts of this section, it is not fully signposted with EuroVelo signs. It is essential to use a map with the route marked on it or a GPS navigation device (mobile phone or bike computer). A GPX file of the route in Northern Ireland can be downloaded at the link above.

As with the route in the Republic of Ireland, while sections on a cycle path are suitable for cyclists of all abilities, the sections on road are recommended only for cyclists who have experience cycling on road sharing the space with other traffic.

The section of the route between Strabane and Cookstown in the Sperrin Mountains involves multiple gradients and therefore it is recommended that cyclists use a bike with suitable gears and that have a compatible level of fitness.
